Experienced Tutor 11+ / CE / GCSE Maths & English
I am a London based private tutor. The majority of students that I tutor are between the ages of 9-18 preparing for 9+, 10+, 11+, 13+, 16+, Key Stage 2, Key Stage 3, GCSE (Edexcel, AQA & iGCSE), A Level and Undergraduate. I believe one-to-one tutoring to be an incredibly important aspect of education. Tutoring offers a great environment in which to learn & for confidence to grow, allowing the student to quickly gain a strong development in the specific subject area. For each student, I design the tutorials to best develop their specific learning and concentration ability, with a view towards gaining context and understanding of the subject in preparation for exams. I am an understanding, empathetic and fun tutor who is patient and able to vary the ways in which to learn, from quick memory games to thoroughly breaking down certain subjects into their component parts.
4000+ contact tutor hours Over the past five years, I have worked with hundreds of students who successfully entered independent schools at 11+ and 13+.
I design a balance between studious focus and fun challenges to maintain concentration and enjoyment & in so doing, I aim to tackle the specific topic areas within each subject this student finds more challenging and developing their method towards answering exam style questions. With all subjects, confidence is an integral factor in achieving great results; I attempt always to instil self-belief and enjoyment in the student’s engagement with the subject feeding into their motivation and confidence to work skillfully and with clear concentration on the task at hand.

Testimonials 10.2018 "Thomas was instrumental in Ollie’s success at the Harrow Test last autumn. We had weekly appointments from last spring, along with intensive coaching at the end of the summer holidays. The once a week appointments using FaceTime worked well. Thomas helped to familiarise Ollie with the computerised Maths and English testing. He also improved his mental maths ability and all aspects of his English - grammar, spelling punctuation and how to structure stories. Ollie found Thomas patient, positive and encouraging at all times and he was always willing to participate in their sessions!" (Parent of year 7 student who successfully attained a place at Harrow at his house of choice) 03.2018 "Thomas tutored our daughter for her iGCSE Maths exam and we can't recommend him enough. He was enthusiastic, clear, kind, thoughtful, reliable and incredibly helpful for our stressed daughter. We had tried a couple of maths' tutors in the run up to GCSE's who just weren't that helpful for her. Thank goodness for Thomas, who we luckily found a month before the exam! Thomas had the ability to teach, the patience to listen and clarity when explaining. Our daughter received an A on the exam. She was just a couple of points away from an A* and said to us, "If only we'd found Thomas a few weeks earlier!!" If only indeed... She'd been predicted a B/C! We couldn't be happier to recommend him!" (Parent of year 11 student who attained an A in iGCSE Maths) 01.2018 “Thomas helped us tremendously in teaching study habits to our son, revising to prepare our son for the range of maths and English questions required of 11 plus exams, and helping him find his strengths. Each week Thomas was encouraging, patient, and sophisticated in his approach and told us about a lot of study tools that we did not know about. After seeing Thomas for 1.5-2 hours each week for almost a year, our son was admitted to his two top choices of schools, one of which has also offered him an arts scholarship and he has since been selected for a top group of kids preparing for maths SATS. Our son has dyslexia and dyspraxia and mild ADD, so school work takes him longer than most children, but he doesn't often have the attention span required to persevere. We knew that spelling was always a challenge for him, but that was the only area of learning that had ever been identified as a problem by any of his teachers. Thomas was always patient and positive, and used consistent, even tones in their work together. He arrived on time 100% of the time, always got straight to work, maintained focus for the entire time, and gave homework each week. As the weeks passed and our son saw for himself how his abilities improved, his self-confidence also improved and he was moved up in his English group at school. He also learned how to avoid distractions and how to motivate himself. We are very grateful to Thomas for all of his help. Every aspect of studying has improved in our home, and our son's relationship to schooling has improved. We are leagues ahead of where were one year ago in terms of discipline and focus, and now have the pleasant and very fortunate task of deciding which secondary school to select." Parent of year 6 student who successfully was offered several places, and on scholarship, at their desired schools. 01.2018 "Thomas has tutored my daughter for over a year for the 11+ examinations. He has been a fantastic tutor: patient, knowledgeable and friendly towards my daughter. Rose developed so much in the time he help her in Maths and English, and she passed the 11+ for Channing School, which was no easy feat. We are very great full to Thomas and I would recommend him to anyone." Parent of year 6 student who successfully was offered a place at their school of choice. 12.2017 "Thomas has been a real help with his learning and our son has enjoyed his sessions with you. His confidence in Maths and English have really shot up since your tuition. Particularly in Maths, he struggled with understanding some of the main areas, but after your sessions he managed to make sense of what was quite hard for him before." Parent of year 6 student who successfully entered his school of choice at 11+. 10.2016 ''Although an able student, my daughter lacked confidence in some areas of the curriculum and also wanted to improve the consistency of her performance. Thomas’ approach was calm and supportive and tailored to her individual concerns and ability. He was approachable and empathetic as well as skilled in explaining relevant concepts. As well as covering key areas of the curriculum, Thomas also provided useful advice about exam technique, which my daughter also found valuable. Working with Thomas on a weekly basis, her confidence and technique improved and I am delighted to report that she achieved the A* grade that she was aiming for. I have no hesitation in recommending Thomas.'' (Parent of year 11 student who attained an A* in iGCSE Maths) 10.2016 ''Thomas has been an excellent tutor. He can explain complicated ideas in a manner which makes them easy to comprehend. He is attentive, can spot any particular problems that I encounter within the work and is patient throughout my tuition.'' (Mature Student, Open University First Year Engineering attaining 95% average) 09.2016 ''We are very grateful for all the work you have done throughout your tutorials with our son. He genuinely looked forward to your tutorials and has noticeably grown in confidence under your care.'' (Parent of year 6 student preparing for High School in both English & Maths) 09.2016 ''All your hard work, support and care during the school year have been much appreciated by the whole family. Both the twins enjoyed your tutoring sessions and have improved hugely, particularly in English. My daughter gained a lot of confidence in her comprehension and started to get marks in the region of 90%.'' (Parent of twins, boy & girl, in year 5; both preparing for pre-tests and Common Entrance in all subjects) 08.2016 ''Thomas helped my daughter to achieve an A* by being clear and patient and by understanding what help she actually needed. She found his explanations and advice very useful and reported that he was encouraging and easy to communicate with. '' (Parent of year 11 student who moved from a B to an A* in iGCSE Maths) 02.2016 “We could not be more grateful to Thomas for the tuition he provided our daughter. She was sceptical of tutors and of her own ability to pass the subjects she had recently failed. Thomas patiently built up her confidence and encouraged her to learn and give the extra effort required to get her the vital passes in English and Maths GCSEs that she needed.” (Parent of GCSE student who moved from a lower grade to a C in both English and Maths)
